Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme-DofE

The Department of Education runs Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes as do some of the Outdoor Centres on the Island such as Ardwhallan.

HRH the Duke of Edinburgh started the award scheme in 1956 and by 1959 the Island had its first candidates. To take part you must be over 14 and younger than 25.

Bronze-3 months Volunteering, Skills, Physical, opting for one for 6 months together with a 2 day expedition.

Silver- 6 months Volunteering and either Skill or Physical with 3 months spent on the remainder together with a 3 day expedition.

Gold-12 months Volunteering and either Skill or Physical with 6 months spent on the remainder, a 4 day expedition and 5 day group  activity.

The Awards are presented at the Gaiety Theatre with Gold being presented at Governor’s House.
