Promenade Methodist Church

Promenade Methodist Church occupies a prominent position on Douglas seafront, in the heart of Loch Promenade. The current building opened in 1976, replacing the former Loch Parade and Victoria Street churches.

The Prom is served by three ministers, who also support the other churches in the Central Circuit: Rev Johanna Smart, Rev Dr Janet Corlett and Rev Richard Hooton.

The church is registered for christenings, weddings and funerals. On 30 November 2023, it was also registered for the solemnisation of marriages between same-sex couples.

Sunday morning services take place at 10.30 a.m. Hymns and readings are projected onto a large screen, with printed materials also available. Services are also streamed live on Zoom for those who would like to attend but are unable to do so in person.

Most of the congregation live in Douglas and Onchan, although some travel from further afield. We also warmly welcome visitors to the Island, especially during the summer months.

As well as being a place of worship, Prom Church seeks to serve the wider community. One example is Café Lingo, an outreach project where people whose first language is not English meet on Saturday mornings to practise English, learn more about life on the Island and enjoy a relaxed chat over a cuppa.

Prom Church is working towards recognition as a Church of Sanctuary.

Thanks to its central location and excellent facilities, the building is used throughout the week by a wide range of community groups and organisations, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Citizens Advice, Ed’s Man Club, Women’s Talk, Family Hub for parents of young children, dance and theatre groups, model racing car groups and business groups. The church is also home to the One World Centre Isle of Man and Amnesty International Isle of Man.

Rooms at Promenade Methodist Church are available to hire at reasonable rates. Facilities include the Sanctuary on the ground floor, a large hall on the second floor, a lounge and kitchen on the first floor, and a newly refurbished hall with adjoining rooms in the basement. The building has ramp access, a lift to the upper floors, a wheelchair-friendly stairlift to the basement and accessible toilet facilities.
