Sally Black

Sally and her family moved to the Island when she was in the last year of Primary School. Her Mother was Manx and her father was stationed at Jurby during the war so they always considered the Isle of Man their home.

One of six children, she was surrounded by a large family of variously creative individuals so there was always something being made, fixed or fabricated in the home.

Originally an illustrator of Science and Natural History subjects Sally gravitated toward Oil Painting after moving back to the Island from the U.S. in 1993.  Still fascinated by the natural world she often integrates an element of the Manx flora or fauna into her large-scale works.

Creativity comes in many forms and can follow a variety of disparate paths so after being asked to help out on a locally produced film (Stiff Upper Lips) she spent almost twenty years working in the Film Industry as a member of the Art Department. Starting as a Buyer she moved up through the department as Standby Art Director, Art Director, Set Decorator and ultimately Production Designer. Her work took her to many locations including Morocco, Spain and Romania.

Inspired by nature and foraging, Sally is a mushroom enthusiast and spends many happy hours wandering the woods in search of new specimens.
