The Giants Hand

As you drive by Rose Cottage you will see an upright hand sticking out of the top of the pillar. This was made from the cast of the hand of Arthur Caley who was born on the Island in 1824. He was seven feet eleven inches tall and so became known as a Giant. The gatepost is the same height.
Arthur Caley went on to have a career in Barnum’s Circus in New York as the “Arabian Giant”. He died in 1889.
