Master Jigoro Kano created Judo in Japan in 1882, from the Samurai combat skill, Jujutsu. The word Judo translates as “the gentle way”. The International Judo Federation was formed in 1951. The sport was first included in the Tokyo Olympics, in 1964 and women have been allowed to compete from 1988 onwards.
